When It Starts With A Poem

I truly felt a song could be built around this poem. I liked the words and meter so well that I believed the song would be a strong one even if the melody wasn’t as good. So I began to create a melody around the words rather than begin the way I normally do, which is to have a completed melody, repeating chorus, and bridge before even thinking of the subject of lyrics ( or even what the subject matter will be ). It’s a bit more difficult doing it this way, because certain words are accented differently than other words and you don’t know if those accents will fit the singing pattern. With a melody, you have x amount of notes to deal with, and that’s it; but poems usually don’t always follow that paradigm. And you certainly don’t want to accentuate words such as “to”, “of”, “for”, or “with”, because those words don’t help to identify the subject matter. That won’t help the listener to know whether it’s a love ballad, a happy song, or a sad one. But I took the plunge anyway, and wrote a melody around a poem I had written called “Someday.” Please go to our “Current Playlist” and listen to it there.
