I remember how intimidating it was when I stared at a blank page, knowing that the average screenplay is 120 pages long… and the average outline requires 30 pages! That was a lot to consider when you’re just starting out. So, after I wrote a two-page outline and realized just how much work was still facing me, I was a bit depressed. I realized the best solution was to grab a box of 3 x 5 cards and write down just what scenes needed to go where. If the screenplay had 45 scenes, it would be easier to face the job of writing 45 two and a half page little scripts rather than facing the daunting task of looking at 120 pieces of paper and filling them. It’s the law of taking a long-term goal and reducing it to a series of manageable objectives. A large number of small tasks are easier to complete than one very big one. Therefore, I needed to write 45 small stories averaging 2.5 pages each. So I wrote two or three lines on each 3 x 5 card stating what needed to be said to move the story forward and then wrote the scene around them. It’s amazing what can be accomplished when you attack your goal one step at a time.
