The thing I’m asked most often is, how do you write a song? Well, sometimes by a title, other times by a scene in a movie script, still other times by a melody I can hear in my head. There were even a few times I had written a poem and decided to set it to music. It doesn’t matter as long as it’s a high quality poem and melody. I always have a pile of random pieces of paper next to me bed in case something comes to me in the middle of the night. Sometimes something hits you; other times not. That’s one reason I always have a movie script I’m working on. There are often between 40 and fifty separate scenes in a movie, and a few of them will require music. So I have a set of circumstances available, and I know what the subject matter of the song will be. “Let Me Spend Each Day With You”, “Prelude In G Minor”, and “All Alone” are good examples of this. I knew exactly what I had to say ( whether with words or music ) and began building a song around that. Another method that works well for me is a random encounter. I was driving down Grandville Avenue and saw a group of people having a block party. I pulled off to the side of the road and began writing. About an hour later I had the song “Grandville Avenue”.
